PREVIOUS PRESS FOR DAVID’S SOLO ALBUMS:
"HIS NEW ALBUM, ROOM ENOUGH TIME ENOUGH SERVES AS A BOLD ENVIRONMENTAL BATTLE CRY…THE LYRICAL POETRY OF THE ALBUM CARRIES THE SOUND HIGHER THROUGH ITS OVERARCHING THEME OF PERSEVERANCE AND PRESERVATION.” – AMERICAN SONGWRITER
DAVID HUCKFELT IS A MIDWESTERN FOLKSINGER WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE INCREASINGLY DESPERATE FIGHT TO STOP THE CONSTRUCTION OF LINE 3, A TAR-SANDS PIPELINE THAT WOULD CUT ACROSS MINNESOTA. HIS NEW SINGLE, “BOOK OF LIFE,” IS DEDICATED TO “THE INDIGENOUS WATER PROTECTORS STANDING UP AND SPEAKING OUT FOR MOTHER EARTH ALL ACROSS TURTLE ISLAND.” - BILL MCKIBBEN, THE NEW YORKER
SINGER-SONGWRITER DAVID HUCKFELT LIKEWISE CELEBRATES BOTH THE JOY AND THE SOCIO-POLITICAL POWER OF ART, EMBRACING A BELIEF, AS HE PUTS IT, “THAT MUSIC SHOULD EXPAND THE SPACE OF THE ROOM WHERE YOU SIT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, BE SO POWERFUL THAT IT NAILS YOU TO THE WALL.” – NO DEPRESSION
"HAUNTED LANDSCAPES AND SPIRITS ARE ALL OVER THE EX-PINES LEADER’S SECOND SOLO LP, ... WHICH DOESN’T STICK TO THE COWBOY MYTH BUT ADDS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE INTO THE STORY. AMONG THE GUESTS ARE VARIOUS NATIVE AMERICAN MUSICIANS, AS ON A FASCINATING COVER OF PATTI SMITH’S "GHOST DANCE"; A SATISFIED MIND IS A LOVELY DUET WITH GREG BROWN." - **** (FOUR STARS) MOJO MAGAZINE
“ROOM ENOUGH, TIME ENOUGH ILLUSTRATES THE POWER OF SONG TO SPEAK LOVE TO POWER, TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH WE PONDER WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN, AND TO EVOKE THE POWER OF MEMORY TO LIBERATE AND TO PROVIDE HOPE.” – FOLK ALLEY
“FOR ITS AMBITIOUS SCOPE AND INVENTIVE COVER INTERPRETATIONS, THIS IS AN EARLY CANDIDATE FOR ONE OF THE TOP ROOTS MUSIC ALBUMS OF THE YEAR.” – GLIDE MAGAZINE
BIOGRAPHY:
David Huckfelt is a singer/ lyricist /activist and founding frontman of Minneapolis indie-folk cult favorites The Pines. Represented by Frank Riley / High Road Touring for nearly a decade, an artist residency at Isle Royale National Park helped launch David’s solo career after The Pines split in 2018, culminating in his solo debut “Stranger Angels” in 2019. An Iowa native and former theology student, Huckfelt attended the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop before turning his attention to songwriting and performing. With improvisational mastery, Huckfelt’s shows and songs of no-spiritual-surrender have earned him a devoted following from small-town opera houses & theaters to national festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests, and the legendary First Avenue mainroom, sharing stages with Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, The Avett Brothers, Iris Dement, Greg Brown, Calexico, Gregory Alan Isakov, Trampled By Turtles & more. An early encounter and collaboration with radical Native American poet John Trudell introduced Huckfelt as friend & partner to an array of Indigenous artists & activists including Louise Erdrich, Winona LaDuke, Gary Farmer, Keith Secola & more, working for climate and social justice under the banner of music + resistance. He was both performer and artistic director of the seminal Indigenous-allied “Water Is Life” music + resistance festival in Duluth, MN in 2022 & 2023, with performances by Bon Iver, Ani Difranco, The Indigo Girls & more. In 2024 he worked as assistant music supervisor on the celebrated AMC TV show “Dark Winds”, with two original songs in season three, and a brand new song set to kick off the anticipated fourth season this coming February.
Performing as a duo with lauded Minneapolis guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker (Andrew Bird, Grace Potter), or with his band The Unarmed Forces featuring J.T. Bates (Bonny Light Horseman, Big Red Machine), Mike Lewis (Bon Iver, Happy Apple) & a rotating cast of guest musicians, Huckfelt’s live shows draw upon the full range & spectrum of American roots music with a staunchly non-traditional, in-the-moment intensity. With roots in the same fertile Midwestern soil that produced legendary folk singers like John Prine and Greg Brown, David's new solo work preserves a rugged optimism that blasts through layers of dark in real time with songs that speak volumes, soft & clear.
